Forgeside enjoy the sun

Forgeside played host to Girling in an unusual warm and sunny late September Saturday in Blaenavon. Head coach Jason Bright asked for a players reaction after last week loss to St Joes, he got this within the first minute of the game with the Forgeside pack pushing the Girling eight back in the first scrum. This forwards dominates counties into the lineouts with MOM Joel Parry performing well in taking Forgeside and Girlings ball. This platform from the scrum and lineout help number 8 Dan Williams to have to control to feed the back line through Gareth Baxter and Dan Fieldhouse.

After pressure within the Girling 22m with strong running from Garin Bright, Joel Price and Jack Swinn scrumhalf Baxter fed Connor Griffiths on a great angle who beat 4 defenders to crash over the line for the opening score.  5-0

Forgeside continued to pressure Girling again with the forward pack working hard. With numbers running out for the defending team forgeside move the ball quickly from one side of the field to the other where backrow Lloyd Wathen pop up running in the centre drawing the last man and giving a fine pass to wing Peter Walker to score

10-0

Forgeside then went off the boil and Girling took full advantage with well work lineouts and backmoves. The lineout dive proved to work well to gain them a try

10-5

Forgeside realising they were in a game when back to keeping the ball tight and working with the forwards. Another powerful straight line run for Griffiths lead to his second try of the game.

15-5 HT

The second half started well for Girling’s but forgeside backline including Ben Penry, Ieaun Pearce and Simon Davies worked hard in defence to keep score down. Special mention to Liam Swinn who came back from injury to play a fine full game on the wing.

With forgeside needing another try for the BP it look like it was in the bag when Connor Griffiths took the ball up through 3 or 4 defenders then beating the last man only to drop the ball over the line.

With the game moving on and no score coach Bright started to make changes. On came Owian Tucker, Lyndon Ward Oillie White and Jaime Ireland.

Forgeside added the pressure on but Girling defenders held strong. To this forgeside opted for a shot at goal to push the score line outside Girling reach. Ieaun Pearce hit this clean through the post.

18-5

With less than a minute left it looked like forgeside would not get the last try. But a penalty given by the referee gave them a chance for a lineout 5m out from the Girling’s line. So with the last play of the game forgeside pack won the lineout and started a driving maul. Then number 8 Dan Williams peeled off the back of the maul and crashed over the line. With Gareth Baxter adding the extras.

FT 25-5 (BP win)

Dan Fieldhouse “it was great to get the win today things we worked hard on at training showed today” “we are now looking forward to this Saturday Monmouth 2nds away in the Ivor jones cup.”
