FORGESIDE VETS PERFORM AGAINST THE ODDS

In the build up to this Help for Heroes charity game against Usk Vets, Forgeside Vets had 24 confirmed players, Unfortunately, due to various reasons some of the players were forced to pull out which resulted in Forge travelling with a squad of only 16.  This didn't deter the visiting side from performing to the best of their ability, particularly against a huge Usk side which had a squad of least 29 players. However, it was Usk that started at a ferocious pace with some neat off-loading in the tackle areas, but Forge defended resolutely. Both sides were on par and competetive in the scrums but it was the lineouts that was the downfall for Forgeside. It took a while for the hosts to get on the scoresheet when their winger broke through some tired defence to score under the posts. Half Time 7-0 to Usk. The second half Forge began to retain the ball well and had some decent possession but were unable to cross the try line due to some sterling defence by the home side. In fact it was Usk who scored next as Forge run out of defenders as the home side spun the ball wide. Forge didn't give up and maintained their attempts to score, and it was some neat inter-play by the backs and forwards who created a try scored by Winger Mark Teale. With minutes ticking away to the end of the match Forge continued their efforts but it wasnt enough as Usk came away victors 14-5, thus breaking Forge's unbeaten run. Every Forgeside player wore their badges on their sleeves and performed excellently, so there was no shame in the loss. Caal Mattravers was the oustanding player for Forge however. Squad:- 1. Mark Jenkins 2. Leighton Williams 3. Andrew Thomas 4. Gareth McCann 5. Andrew Fry 6. Tony Davies 7. Paul Hughes 8. Caal Mattravers 9. Steve Reed 10. Bill Parry 11. Mark Teale 12.Nathan Edwards 13. Morgan Parry 14. Peter Walker 15. Dai Powell 16. Dean Williams. Usk are looking to honour the return fixture sometime in the autumn, hopefully Forgeside will be at full strength.
