Trefil 29 v Forgeside 22

It seems as though Lady Luck has alluded Forgeside yet again which has been the theme throughtout this entire season. Every 50-50 call seems to go against the men from the Ponderosa and this game was no different, and injuries have not helped either. With at least 10 players absent for various reasons Forge still travelled with a strong squad but it was the home side who were on the scoresheet first with a penalty try, as the ref deemed that the scrum was collapsed near they try line, a harsh call some might say. Soon after the hosts scored another try which was a result of some unforced errors by the Forge players. With Forge playing up the steep slope they were dominant in the lineouts and held their own in the scrums but were unable to gain any territorial advantage, however a brief period allowed them to score a penalty, converted by Fly Half Morgan Parry. Trefil were the recipients of another try which extended the lead to 15-3. Forge were awarded another penalty soon after and were very competetive around the field. They were rewarded for their efforts minutes from the interval when Parry grubbered a kick through the home side's stern defence and gathered to score. Half time score 15-11. With the slope in Forge's favour in the second half they started to use it to their advantage but Trefil were resolute in defence. At this point the visitors seemed to implode for a period of 10 minutes and allowed Trefil to score 2 quick tries in succession. Forge were down to the bare bones again as new signing Winger Ryan Basham had to leave the field with a severely damaged hand. They were reduced again soon after as Flanker Aeron Pearce sustained a hamstring injury and Centre Matt Meredith with a damaged shoulder, but he played on never the less. This didn't deter them but spurred Forge on even more and they soon scored another penalty. The visitors found their second wind and started to pressure the host's try line and were awarded another penalty, Parry slotting over. With the scores at 29-17 to Trefil and only 5 minutes left, Forge continued to pressure, this paid off as Parry intercepted a pass and scored near the posts. Unfortunately, and even though the referee signalled that there was 4 minutes remaining after the conversion he ended the game prematurely. Who knows what could have happened in the last 4 minutes? Another game where either the bounce of the ball or a spilled ball from a ruck went against Forge and where Lady Luck alluded them but a losing bonus point was well deserved. It wasn't as though Trefil created anything of substance either but they took their chances. Some solid performances by many players, Captain Steve Howard seemed to be everywhere, Flanker Cain Preece with his usual standard of play, Prop Connor Griffiths for some barnstorming runs to name but a few, and Morgan Parry for scorring all of Forgeside's points. Next up is New Panteg where there is no love lost!!!!
