FORGESIDE 3 v NEWPORT SARACENS 12

Forge were looking to atone for their heavy loss to the Sarries when they met for the first league game of this season, albeit they visited with a depleted squad of only 13 players then. There wasn't going to be a repeat of that performance as Forge fielded a strong squad on this occasion. It was a telling feature when the Sarries arrived at the Ponderosa to see the ground half covered in snow and the frosty conditions that they weren't that keen on playing the game. This played into the hands of the hosts as the visitors found it a differnet prospect from when they met at the begining of the season. However, it was the visiting side who scored the only two tries of the game in the first half from close range, which was only a result of some lapse defence by the hosts which was uncharacteristic as their defence throughout the game was resolute. The host's only reply was a penalty, converted by Man-of-the Match Cain Preece who started at Flanker and ended up in the Centre. Forge's bad luck continued when they lost Centre Matt Meredith and Fly Half Luke 'Smeg' Jones to injury early on so they were forced to reshuffle the back line and back row. Forge's set pieces in the first half was the only negative as this allowed Sarries some decent possession from tunrover ball. In fact, the visitors didn't really create anything of any substance as they just lived off the host's inability to shore up their set pieces. The second half Forge resolved their set piece issues and started to gain some decent possession and territorial advantage, and as result scored a try of their own deep into the second half but the referee failed to see the grounding so didn't award it. A harsh decision indeed! Credit to the Sarries though for their outstanding defence as they were camped on their try line for a long period. With the second half scoreless, the deficit remained the same in the favour of the visitors and the only disappointment was that Forge didn't come away with a losing bonus point, which they fully deserved for their efforts. Forgeside take a break from league action this coming Saturday but meet Trefil away the week after.
