Forgeside travel away and come home with nothing

After last weeks tough cup game against Usk Forgeside traveled to Newport to play St Joesph in the league.

The team welcomed new summer signing Joel Price as hooker making his first start.

Unfortunately the summer weather was not in Newport with heavy wind and rain for most of the game and credit must go to both teams for trying to play good rugby in poor conditions.

With St joes selected to play down hill with the wind and passive scrums Forgeside started the game slow.

With scrums a non contest props of Connor Griffiths and Garin Bright where around the park with ball in hand. Supported by Joel Price, Joel Parry and Jaime Ireland.

After an injury to Ben Penry openside Bradley Jenkins had to move out to the centre brining on former player Lloyd Wathen after 3 years out of the game.

Forgeside woke up towards the end of the half with forwards and back running straight hard lines. After several minutes of pressure scrum half Gareth Baxter doing as most good scrums half’s do and refereeing the game pointed out St Joes players off side. This resulted in him picking the ball from the base of the scrum and running in untouched which he converted.

HT 13-7

Unfortunately the 2nd half started the same as the first half with St Joes on top. If not for strong defence from Peter Walker, Simon Davies and Aeron Pearce the score line may of been worse. It was not until the last 10 minutes that Forgeside woke up. With replacements Andrew Thomas and David Wagg on Forgeside forwards started to take control. If was in fact Thomas who crashed over the line to give Forgeside the 2nd try which was converted by Baxter.

Backs coach Rob Livings “I am disappointed with the over all result we had a few chances but only played for about 15 minutes of the 80 minutes game. We have got a fair bit to work on this week ahead of Girling at home but I am sure the boys will be up for it”

Captain Dan Fieldhouse “ the boys just did not turn up today, we need to work out why that was and change it for next week. It is good to see the age of the pack is so young and games like today will teach them a good lesson”
